Wind Sensors compatible with Plumecast

Plumecast needs wind speed and direction infrmation from a site representative of the point of release. It does not have to be ​actually at the source. In fact in level terrain it could be many kilometres away.

Plumecast needs data collected with a short sample period, ideally 1 second or less.

Researcgh carried out in conjunction with the the University of Reading, Department of Meteorology has confirmed that this is sufficient to capture the relevant turbulence characteristics of the atmosphere. 

The data interval can be much longer.

 

The ideal sensors are sonic anemometers. Mechanical (‘cup and vane’ or ‘propellor’) sensors with fast response times may be suitable and slower ones can be used if necessary but will give larger risk areas to allow for the increased uncertainty in turbulence data.

 

Communication with Plumecast is straightforward. It can take data in the standard NMEA formats (both WIMWV and IIMWV headers) and the default format of the widely used Gill 'Windsonic' sensor to allow simple 'out of the box' installation and replacement if using this popular instrument. It can also use data messages in the format of the ALOHA dispersion model allowing it to operate with weather stations designed for ALOHA or in conjunction with ALOHA.

Plumecast can also connect to the Weatherfile network and download data from any suitably configured Weatherfile site.

Plumecast reads data from a specified port (real or virtual) and can be configured for a variety of baud rates and protocols.
